Did you know that stingrays give birth to live young and not eggs?Stingrays, like our eagle ray below, are "ovoviviparous" - this means that the mother keeps the eggs inside her body after they hatch, feeding the pups fluids and egg yolks to help them grow.There's a new loggerhead in town - meet nobomvu!
Nobomvu is a female sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle that was rescued at Gansbaai on 13 July 2021 by the community - a rescue that required the help of over 13 volunteers! Nobomvu was tangled in ghost fishing gear, and has been undergoing treatment for associated injuries in the care of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation's turtle rehabilitation team.Meet the rocksucker - a fish that is awesome, because it sucks!
Meet the rocksucker, and its extended family - the clingfishes! Clingfishes are a family of small fish found around the world in tropical and temperate seas, from shores to the deep ocean, and even in some rivers! What makes them unique is a special structure on their chest called a "sucking disc", that they can use to cling onto rocks, seaweeds and other objects to easily endure strong currents, and even being battered by waves.Helping a young sunfish find it's way back to the sea

Part of our teams daily routine is patrolling the V&A Waterfront to monitor the local marine wildlife and assist animals in need. Sometimes, this means hopping into a boat and following seals around the local harbour to disentangle those with loops of plastic pollution ensnaring them.Long service awards 2022 - thank you to our family!

Once a year, we take the opportunity to thank our long-serving team members with a special event - thank you for everything you do!The morning kicked off with a short message from Two Oceans Aquarium CEO Michael Farquhar, General Curator Tinus Beukes and Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation Executive Chairperson Ann Lamont, highlighting the amazing things our team has been able to accomplish over the past tumultuous two years - and what we can accomplish going forward together. It is during the Western leopard toad breeding season in Cape Town that we often get to see some of the other species of frogs which share the breeding pond sites with the toads. These include arum lily frogs, Cape river frogs, clicking stream frogs, Cape sand frogs, common platannas, flat cacos and, in recent years, painted reed frogs (not seen in Zeekoevlei, but they are present at the Bergvliet and Kirstenhof breeding sites).
