Turbo is a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) that was rescued on 22 September 2021 at De Hoop Nature reserve by members of Spill Tech, who initially thought she was dead. De Hoop rangers rapidly helped get Turbo into the hands of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation's Turtle Rehabilitation Team.
Upon arrival, Turbo weighed 11.8kg, was very weak and had several wounds. Turbo had also eaten plastic pollution, and pooped out pieces of plastic a few days after arriving at our Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre. Although Turbo was cleared for an early release, the team noticed in November last year that Turbo had developed a small lump above their neck, which grew slowly over time, and the veterinary team operated to remove it. This necessitated a longer than anticipated rehabilitation period.
Currently, Turbo weighs 14.3kg and keeps growing every week! Turbo was moved to the I&J Ocean Exhibit as part of the next stage of their rehabilitation, to promote exercise and healing. This larger area also means that Turbo can receive some fun enrichment before being released into their natural habitat (and spend time with fellow green turtle Bob)!
